121 Cannon Street
121 CANNON ST.One of the most unique homes in the Historical District of Georgetown has only been a residence for a mere 100 years. Probably built in the mid 1800’s because pegged hand hewn beams are found in the attic. In fact a scuttle is in the ceiling so anyone interested can easily see. The location is directly behind the Winyah Indigo Society Hall. The society itself was formed as a Convivial Club in1740 and received its’ Royal Charter in1758. One of the many acts of charity was the establishment of a free school. 121 Cannon St. was built behind the Sociaty Hall as the one room (24x24) school annex to the original school.Approximately 1900 a center hall and the second room were added across the front. The front door was moved to the center hall which is the entrance today, but the initial door still exists. The rooms were heated by pot-bellied stoves and 2 small structures in the backyard were marked “Girls” and “Boys” (no longer exist). The school annex was purchased and became a home around 1915. At this time the 2 classrooms were divided into 4 rooms and a bedroom, back porch, old kitchen, original china cabinet, sink, counter tops, pantry, and bathroom were added. The original floors and all the old doors remain except one between the den and the master bedroom. The front porch was also enlarged. The home remained in the Fraser family until purchased it in 1995. 121 Cannon St. came into the twenty first century with remodeling and restoration by the present owners. Two bedrooms and a full bath were added upstairs taking advantage of the huge attic. As the layers peeled, off every inch of square footage was utilized for storage in a home with very few closets. To the right of the entrance hall is the present day living room. Here is found the front door of the annex and a fireplace with a Vermont Castings wood stove (new) which can be converted to coal. Stained glass windows created by owner flank the fire place and remain with the house. The rear portion of the original classroom became a new kitchen and dining area. The textured walls and 12’ ceilings actually give an old European feel. Probably the most unique find in the entire house is the old school Blackboard which is now the backdrop for the owner's original paintings. On another wall under old wallpaper the hand written date, 1866, is visible. Also in the kitchen is a 1947 red Chambers stove in original condition and working order with the manufacturer’s directions. In order to keep the layout of the house simple, let’s go back to the center front hall. The new stairway and half bath are located at the end. To the left is the den/study with an incredible amount of storage. What looks like a fireplace is not and there is no chimney or flue. A custom built computer desk remains with this room. Behind the den/study is the master bedroom and screened porch. In these older homes the conveniences we enjoy today just are not possible or convenient. Some inside plumbing falls into this category and you make do with the space you have. The bath is actually off the den and has the 1900’s tub and medicine cabinet. Remember this still beats the 2 little structures behind the one room schoolhouse. Behind the master, the 2 room studio if found and the back porch follows. This completes the historical blueprint and hopefully you will add your own flair to this charming home and one of a kind location.Georgetown was established as a colonial seaport in the early 1700’s. 408 Mohican Drive
Black RiverFifteen to twenty minutes from Georgetown is a community (not a neighborhood) built around the long and convoluted river eventually empting into the Intracoastal Waterway. Black River gets its name from the tannin stained waters winding through the many low country swamps, the source of this beautiful and pristine water. The center depth, approximately 30 feet, offers great recreational opportunities such as fresh water fishing, boating, skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, and observing wildlife. This body of water empties into Winyah Bay, a part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Black Mingo Creek, with depths of 23 feet, is a tributary of Black River.
