QUEEN ON THE HILL
The Queen on the Hill 8430 Idylwood Road A Brief History by Karen Washburn This gracious home was designed and built for Herbert F. Williams about 1904 on a tract of 29 acres deeded to him by his father, Franklin Williams. The property was originally part of the 434 acre Woodford Plantation, which was the Williams family’s home. During the Civil War, the Williams were ardent Confederates. Franklin served with John Singleton Mosby, as a partisan ranger. The plantation suffered much abuse from Yankees troops and the main house was torn down. After the war was over, the family built a new home. The land was rehabilitated and planted in crops and orchards. The farms also had dairy cattle and chickens. In the late nineteenth century the Williams family decided to supplement their farming income by taking in summer boarders. At that time every Washingtonian, who could possible afford to, escaped the city heat by moving to a summer residence. Many Northern Virginians opened their homes for summer visitors. Woodford was ideally located to be attractive to summer guests. It was built on a hill that always had breezes. There were large porches, woodland walking trails, a pond for boating and fishing, and fresh food grown on the farm for every meal. Best of all it was a short carriage ride from the railroad station at Wedderburn. Visitors could take the steam train from Alexandria and be delivered to Woodford in about an hour and a half. Woodford grew in popularity every year. The Williams expanded the house and added porches. However, there were still more guests than the main house could accommodate. Franklin’s sons built their own homes and took in the overflow of paying guests. In 1903 a new electric trolley line was built close to the farm on today’s Electric Avenue. The opening of the new trolley made Woodford more popular than ever. Trolleys ran on a frequent schedule and summer visitors could easily go into Vienna or Fairfax to shop and visit. To capitalize on the resort business, Franklin’s son Herbert built a new complex on the property deeded to him by his father. He built 8430 Idylwood Road for his personal home, which he also opened to summer visitors. The house included every state of the art feature of the day. He named his home Bellview, which was indeed an appropriate name. Sited on a gentle hill, there was always a nice summer breeze and beautiful views and the house was designed with large windows to take advantage of both. High ceilings also helped to keep it cool. The house was wired for electricity, which was available from the electric trolley company. This was a large advantage because most country homes didn’t have access to electric power for another twenty years. The elegant dining room was equipped with a large built-in china closet and a button in the floor near the head of the table that rang a bell in the kitchen to summons the servants. Upstairs there was a sleeping porch on the corner of the house with two walls of windows. Today it has been converted to the master bedroom sitting room and closet. Another luxury item was an indoor bathroom with water cisterns in the attic above it. The cisterns are still there today, but no longer in use. It was indeed a comfortable place for summer visitors to enjoy themselves. Three other smaller houses were built near the main house. Herbert hired Local Vienna builder Joe Kidwell to build the homes. One of the houses, which is no longer standing, was designed to be the dining hall and had a ball room. Herbert employed a cook and a chef to prepare the meals. Fresh garden vegetables and fruits were grown on the Woodford farm and the dairy herd supplied plenty of milk for cream and butter. Ice for cold drinks and food storage was always available. The Williams cut ice from their pond every winter and stored it in straw and sawdust in their ice hou
